Hidden In Plain Sight

I am known to be detail-oriented. However, even still, I often look at things but sometimes I don't see them.

We have things in our lives that we look at all the time:

The kitchen counter.

The shoelaces on our right shoe.

The doorknob to our bedroom.

But when was the last time you really saw those things? Studied the patterns, appreciated the fabric, noticed the color?

These examples are so ordinary that even though we look at them every single day, they blend in with the rest of life and we miss them. That's the concept of things being hidden in plain sight. There are items in our lives that have become so normal that we forget to "see" them.

Or, maybe this scene is familiar to you. How many times have you left your house for a few days only to return and see things in your home that you've been overlooking for months?

How long has that box been sitting there?

Wow, the sun has really faded those pillows!

When did the tree sprout olives? How long have those been there?

Normal life has a way of making the normal disappear.

This is fine when it's a box in the corner. This is not fine when it's God's presence in your life everyday.

It is totally normal to experience God's presence daily. He is with us. Everyday. All the time. Amen.

However, so often, because it is normal to experience His presence (although mind-blowing!), we miss him in those normal moments. It sometimes takes us getting away from the 'normal' for a bit to really see Him again and recognize His presence in everyday things.

I heard it said once that every so often we need a 'change of place, change of pace' to reignite our awareness of His presence. I have, personally, found this to be so helpful. While I do like to have a regular place and time to read my Bible, talk to the Lord, and hear what He wants to say to me, I will switch up those places if I find my awareness and awe to be lacking. That's when I know it's time to find a new place (and maybe even time) to meet with the Lord. This subtle change will always kick-start my vision to see what has been hidden in plain sight - His presence with me. Everyday. All the time. Amen.

This week, take a look around. What do you see—really see? Are you able to see the Lord's hand in your life, moving and orchestrating your steps? Are you able to see Him in the normal, everyday moments and experience His presence in them? If not, take a pause and consider changing your place and pace and see if that will give you a renewed vision for what's been right in front of you all this time—His loving presence with us right there in plain sight.
